The Work in Practice

Interledger grantees work across the world in different financial environments, from regions with limited infrastructure to highly connected digital economies. They include community-based organizations, researchers, technologists, and advocates who build infrastructure, advance research, shape policy, and expand how financial systems work in practice.

    ARTICLE 19 will map how Hong Kong authorities obtain financial data from overseas financial service providers and what companies do (or fail to do) when responding to such requests. They will deliver (1) legal and policy briefings on US and UK pathways for data access and their human-rights implications; (2) a review of major payment and platform companies’ privacy and transparency practices; and (3) a bilingual (English/Cantonese) practical guide for Hong Kong civil society and a companion resource for fintechs on rights-respecting responses to government requests.

    Encouraging content creators to follow the law and ethics means that they will use their grants to be part of the “solution,” as opposed to the “problem.” We want to create an ecosystem where lengthy and expensive privacy and IP-related suits are no longer necessary because the projects have attended to these issues in advance.

    Self-Sovereign Identity provides means to return control over users' identities data back to the individuals themselves, enhancing privacy & security, and furthermore authenticity of the data. With this project we propose to research & design an Interledger-based payment protocol that extends our existing Open Source SSI stack to enable micropayments when exchanging W3C Verifiable Credentials. This will enable multiple use cases, bringing great value to the Web Monetization but also to the SSI ecosystems.

    Interruptor is the first Portuguese journalistic outlet to take a data-driven approach to analyse cultural issues, beyond current affairs. Our work is anchored on the principles of open source and open culture.  All of our content is accessible without paywalls. We respect the privacy of our readers and listeners and do not use any invasive trackers nor cookies. Our goal with Web Monetization Standard is to use it as an extra revenue stream for our work and empower other small media to do the same. Our motto is "Cultura livre, código aberto": "free culture, open code".

  7. Lowering Legal Friction

    Regulation, including GDPR, consumer law and privacy, presents a barrier to entry to implementing Web Monetization standard and Interledger Protocol. We will develop a suite of legal texts including a template for generating a GDPR record of processing, a privacy policy, a generic terms of use, and consumer terms for using Web Monetization Standard and Interledger Protocol. We will develop them in the open, and make them available under a Creative Commons Attribution licence. We want people implementing Web Monetization to concentrate on providing excellent content and a great user experience, and not have to waste time and resources on unnecessarily expensive and time-consuming routes to compliance with legal regulation.

  8. Immers Space: experience the Immersive Web together

  9. moncon - monetize your content should be fair, private and secure

    Developing moncon, an open-source framework that lets content creators securely monetize their content. moncon is composed of an API, a dashboard where content creators can manage the site configuration, payments and metrics, and a wallet that will allow users to pay for and store the content they buy. Users can consume content, paying for the time they spend and storing content in their wallets. Creators can define the number of copies allowed and can set content to expire, making it exclusive and special for users.

  10. Reciprocal ecosystem in decentral health-data, health research, Solid-webapps and financial transactions for a more inclusive wellbeing

    Researching and building a proof of concept as a first step towards a new financial and data ecosystem combining Solid Webapps, Solid Pods, and Web Monetization. Users will pay webapps to access supportive health webapps and process and store their data on their Solid Pod. Researchers get access to data of the user’s Solid Pod and pay the user for the data, with respect for privacy and consent. This will support health improvements on both a personal and community level, will give people control over their data, and will simultaneously nourish academic research institutes with data from more diverse groups.
