Jeremiah Lee
Software Developer & Digital Human Rights Advocate
Jeremiah Lee is a humanitarian software developer and digital human rights activist. He previously worked on data infrastructure at Stripe, hardware integrations at Spotify, and web APIs at Fitbit. Originally from California, he now lives in Stockholm.
Ambassador Project
Jeremiah’s project explored the economic opportunities created by the shift from centralized social media platforms to the social web, also known as federated social networks or the fediverse (such as Mastodon).
His work focused on extending Web Monetization beyond HTML to the social web’s core data format (Activity Streams 2) and delivery protocol (ActivityPub), enabling new ways for creators on decentralized networks to earn income.
What Inspired His Work
"The social web’s emergence created an opportunity for creators, ignored by dominant platforms, to build an audience of their own"
Jeremiah saw an opportunity to address creator monetization gap by bringing Interledger Open Payments and Web Monetization to emerging decentralized social networks.
Vision for the Future
"Federated social networks need federated payment networks. A more equitable future is possible and plausible if we fight for it now."
He believes that global payment systems could evolve into networked infrastructures similar to the internet itself, creating more equitable access to financial participation and reducing dependence on centralized platforms.
