Web Monetization
An open web standard for paying content creators directly through the browser.
Get Started (opens in a new tab)
Web Monetization is an open standard, advanced through the W3C, that lets websites receive small, automatic payments from visitors as they browse, with no interruptions and no data harvested in exchange. It offers an additional revenue model to the two models most of the web relies on: advertising, which funds content by tracking users and selling their attention, and subscriptions, which exclude audiences who cannot or will not pay a recurring fee.

A site signals that it can receive payments, and a compatible browser or extension, where the visitor has a Web Monetization-enabled wallet address, streams micropayments to the site as the visitor engages with its content. Because Web Monetization is built on Open Payments, it uses the same wallet addresses and open standards as the rest of the Interledger stack.
The Interledger Foundation’s Role
Web Monetization is currently being advanced through the W3C standards process. The Interledger Foundation supports its development as an open standard and the ecosystem work around it. It complements existing monetization models rather than replacing them, and the long-term aim is for it to be supported natively across browsers.
