Implementing a new payments protocol from a specification is complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Many providers do not have the engineering capacity to build a full implementation in-house, and those that do would be duplicating work that already exists as tested, maintained, open-source software.

Rafiki is the open-source, ready-to-use reference implementation of the Interledger Protocol and the Open Payments standard.

It gives financial service providers, including banks, wallets, and other regulated payment providers, the infrastructure to connect and support Open Payments without building everything from scratch. It handles payment flows, authorization, and connectivity, so providers can focus on their own product rather than rebuilding the foundation.

Built for Regulated Financial Institutions

Rafiki is designed for financial service providers operating under applicable financial regulation, not for individual developers or unregulated platforms. Interledger-powered networks built on Rafiki require participants to be licensed entities, with KYC and AML/CFT obligations, sanctions screening, and fraud prevention expected of every provider that connects. Those requirements are what let the network operate with confidence across regulated financial environments.
