Her research examines payment interoperability in mass transit, comparing how cities structure fare payment systems and whether open protocols such as the Interledger Protocol could support both economic and physical mobility.

How Money Could Move Us: Digital Payments and Interoperability Among Global Mass Transit Systems

Sophia Collender studies payment interoperability through the lens of mass transit. She compares how New York, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Jakarta and Nairobi structure fare payments, and asks whether open protocols such as the Interledger Protocol could widen access to transit for unbanked and underbanked riders.
