Rhyza

Free, open source software that lets Financial Service Providers run Interledger and Open Payments on infrastructure they control.

Talk to our Integration team
Rhyza Engineering Manager, Max, on stage talking about Rhyza

Status: Now in alpha for development and testing.

Every new payment partner usually means another bespoke integration, with its own technical and operational arrangements to build and maintain. Rhyza gives your institution one open source connection point instead. It runs inside your own infrastructure, alongside the ledger, accounts and identity provider you already operate, and connects you to two open standards. Interledger lets you connect directly with partner institutions and exchange payments across currencies and borders. Open Payments lets third-party apps, such as online stores, request payments from your customers’ accounts, with every request approved by the customer at your institution.

What Rhyza Makes Possible

Offer Open Payments to your customers.

Open Payments gives third-party apps, such as online stores, a standard way to request payments from your customers’ accounts. Rhyza runs the Open Payments services for you. When an app makes a request, your systems are notified and your customer approves it through your own identity provider, so the customer relationship stays with you.

Open new payment corridors.

Institutions running Rhyza can peer with each other over Interledger and move money between their customers, across currencies, without the need for custom integrations. Settlement is not handled through Rhyza, meaning the institutions can settle with each other however suits their relationship.

Stay in control.

Rhyza is deployed and operated by your own team, inside your own environment. Your systems manage every resource in your instance through a REST Admin API, and webhooks report events as they happen so you can approve or cancel payment requests on your terms. The software is free, with no license fees, and the code is open for your team to audit.

Grow without rebuilding.

Rhyza is composed of multiple microservices, each one scales on its own, exposing multiple APIs for raw ILP access, Open Payments, and system administration. As you add peers and more apps connect, you add capacity where the demand is, without reworking the whole system.

The next generation of Rafiki

Rhyza is the next generation of Rafiki. It keeps Rafiki’s purpose and is rebuilt around what its deployments taught us, with an architecture designed for larger networks and more connected apps. Rafiki was recognized as a Digital Public Good in 2026, and Rhyza carries the same commitment to open, freely available infrastructure.

Built for regulated institutions

Rhyza is intended for banks, credit unions, wallets, mobile money providers, and other financial service providers that operate under financial regulation. KYC, AML/CFT, sanctions screening, and fraud prevention stay with your institution, as they do today.

Funding and support for your integration

Rhyza is in alpha now, ready for development and testing, which makes this the right time to start planning. Our integration team can walk you through the architecture and help you scope a deployment around your existing systems. Through the Digital Financial Services grant, the Interledger Foundation also funds financial service providers that are ready to implement Rhyza. The Digital Financial Services Grant is currently open for applications.

How integration works

Rhyza is designed to fit around the systems you already run. A typical integration has three steps.

  1. Evaluate. Run your Rhyza integration in a test environment, supported by the Interledger integrations team.
  2. Deploy. Run the published Rhyza container images in your environment. A Kubernetes Operator handles rollout, scaling and reconciliation.
  3. Connect your systems. Integrate with the REST Admin API to manage your instance, and set up a webhook listener to respond to events from Rhyza.
  4. Enable customer approvals. Connect your identity and FX providers so your customers can approve payments requested by third-party apps.
