Unlocking Financial Interoperability in Latin America

Mexico’s payment ecosystem remains fragmented, costly, and highly dependent on cash. According to our joint study with Finnovista, 92% of adults still use cash for daily transactions, remittances lose an average of 5% in fees, and only 13.5% of microenterprises can afford to accept digital payments. At the same time, Mexico has one of the most vibrant fintech ecosystems in Latin America - yet the benefits of innovation are blocked by silos, regulatory uncertainty, and market concentration.

This panel will unpack the findings of "El Internet de las Oportunidades: Desbloqueando la interoperabilidad financiera en América Latina", highlighting the opportunities and barriers to building a truly interoperable financial system. The discussion will explore lessons from Brazil’s Pix and India’s UPI, the potential to reduce merchant costs by up to 85%, and how greater interoperability could unlock over $1 billion USD annually in remittance savings for Mexican households.

Moderated by Beatriz Durán, the conversation will feature principal researcher Jordi Puig, Finnosummit, and industry leaders. Together, they will debate the role of regulators, incumbents, and innovators in transforming Mexico’s “archipelago” of financial systems into a seamless Internet of Opportunity.
