Hackathon Terms & Conditions

Key hackathon dates

  • Registration for the Interledger Hackathon 2024 (“hackathon’) will close on 4 October 2024 (00:00).
  • The hackathon will take place in-person from 10:00am on the 19th until 15:00pm on the 20th of October 2024, at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
  • Participants will be required to attend in person. 
  • Participants will be required to present their final hackathon entry to the judges on 20 October 2024 at UCT.

Who can participate in the Interledger 2024 Hackathon 

  • To be eligible to participate in the hackathon, participants must:
    • Be 18 years or older 
    • Be physically able to join the hackathon in-person on 19 and 20 October 2024
    • Use their own equipment, such as a laptop, in order to register and participate in the hackathon. Participants will be responsible for their own equipment throughout the event. 
    • Allow the Interledger Foundation access to any materials that are created as part of their entry for the purpose of evaluation by the judges and other required personnel. 
  • By registering for the hackathon, participants confirm they are eligible to do so. If they don’t meet the criteria, they may be disqualified or forfeit any prize(s). 

How to register 

  • Registration and participation in the hackathon is free of charge. 
  • Participants can register as individuals or as teams 
  • Teams can include up to 4 people. 
  • Participants can register at https://interledger.org/summit/hackathon
  • There are a limited number of spaces available for the hackathon.
  • Participants who have secured a space in the hackathon will be notified. Should the participant fail to respond after the Interleder Foundation has made a reasonable number of attempts to contact the participant, the Interledger Foundation may select another participant. 

Hackathon participation 

  • We ask that participants abide by the Interledger Foundation Code of Conduct. The hackathon is a communal space for developing ideas and building together.
  • Participants will make use of the Interledger technology and associated partner technology to build their hackathon solutions.
  • Onboarding support will be provided on 19 October 2024. 
  • Each team will be required to submit an entry online on 20 October 2024 by 11:00 that resonates with the hackathon theme and makes use of Interledger technology.
  • The entry should not contain inappropriate, explicit language, racist, religious, or culturally divisive content deemed to be offensive, inflammatory or prejudicial. 
  • The majority of the participant's entries must be created during the event. 
  • Participants may utilize open-source software in their submissions. All utilized open-source software and licenses must be clearly identified and disclosed in the submission. 
  • The Interledger Foundation reserves the right to disqualify participants who violate applicable laws or display conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the hackathon and the code of conduct. 

Prizes

  • The prizes are to be awarded as follows:
    • First place: R90 000 in cash or the cash equivalent in Takealot vouchers, the value of which will be split evenly between each member of the first place team. 
    • Second place: R50 000 in cash or the cash equivalent in Takealot vouchers, the value of which will be split evenly between each member of the second place team.
    • Third place: R20 000 in cash or the cash equivalent in Takealot vouchers, the value of which will be split evenly between each member of the third place team.
  • The prizes are not transferable and will be handed out to the winning participants on 20 October 2024. 
  • All participants must be present to accept the prize 
  • The Interledger Foundation reserves the right to substitute any prize with a prize of a similar commercial value. 

Selection of winners

  • To determine the winners of the hackathon, the Interledger Foundation will appoint a panel of judges who will, at their sole discretion, assess each hackathon entry in terms of a number of criteria that will be made available to participants.
  • Winners will be required to be available for interviews by the Interledger Foundation.

Limitation of liability

  • You agree to release, indemnify, defend, and hold the Interledger Foundation and their affiliates, subsidiaries, directors, officers, employees, sponsors and agents, and any other organizations related to the hackathon, harmless, from any and all claims, injuries, damages, expenses or losses to person or property and/or liabilities of any nature that in any way arise from participation in the hackathon or acceptance or use of a prize or parts thereof.

Originality and Open Source Licencing

  • Participants represent and warrant that their entry is and will be the participant's original work and doesn’t infringe on the intellectual property rights or proprietary rights of any third party. 
  • Participants agrees to to open source their hackathon entry under the Apache 2.0 open source licence. All utilized open-source software and licenses must be clearly identified and disclosed in the entries Readme.. 
  • By taking part in the hackathon, the Interledger Foundation makes no agreement and provides no undertaking to support further development of the hackathon entry.  Any further development of the hackathon entry post the hackathon end date (20th October 2024, 15:00) is at the discretion of participant(s).

General Terms  

  • By registering and participating in the hackathon, participants agree to be bound by these terms.
  • By registering and participating in the hackathon, participants agree that the Interledger Foundation may collect and process their personal information for the purposes of this hackathon, including but not limited to processing and administering registrations, sharing participant’s personal information with service providers as necessary to conduct and operate the hackathon, communicating with participants about the hackathon and making public announcements about winners.
  • Processing of your personal information is subject to the privacy policies of the Interledger Foundation and any third parties.
  • Participants consent to the use of their name, photo, recording, image or likeness as well as participant hackathon entry in promotion or marketing of the hackathon.
  • Intereledger Foundation may extend, shorten, or cancel the hackathon immediately without notice.
